I'm very happy to share that my long-term project “Botanical Studies” is featured in the current issue of the renowned SCHWARZWEISS Magazine (Issue 166). The article, titled “Stille Poesie der Pflanzen” offers insights into the origins, intention, and visual language of this body of work.

The roots of “Botanical Studies” trace back to my childhood in the 1980s, when I would often flip through my mother’s herbarium collections. Those early encounters sparked a fascination for the subtle structures and elegant forms of plants. Later, I found inspiration in the scientific illustrations of Ernst Haeckel and the photographic work of Karl Blossfeldt. These influences shaped my decision to capture botanical objects in a minimalist black-and-white style that emphasizes their inherent beauty and complexity.

“Botanical Studies” is about revealing the often-overlooked details of the plant world. By eliminating color, the viewer’s attention is drawn to texture, shape, and pattern. The images are created using natural light in a carefully constructed studio setup. I often apply techniques like focus stacking, which can involve up to 70 single exposures combined into one image to portray the subject with maximum depth and clarity.

The final works are presented as high-quality FineArt prints on Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta paper. Each print is framed with a precisely cut museum mat, mounted on archival board, and set in a handcrafted black oak frame. An anti-reflective museum glass adds depth and brilliance, emphasizing the fine details and inviting the viewer to engage with the quiet poetry of plants.
