Home, sweet home! Once a year from March to May my local woods are mutating into this smelly wild garlic wonderland.

Every year I reach a „breaking point“ when I can’t stand the smell anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I love wild garlic but having the smell in your nose 24/7 for weeks can be a little bit annoying esp. when you eat a piece of cake or ice cream in a café at the edge of the forest. Or when you riding your mountain bike on those trails - even the bike smells like it... lol

Sometimes it’s funny, when you re-visit some of your older images and realize that the creative vision of the past still resonates with my passions today. I remain captivated by black and white photography—especially when it frames the drama of clouds, the mood of the weather, the majesty of glaciers, and the allure of high mountains. In retrospect I would have changed the image composition slightly but overall I still love the image as it is.

Winter felt out of character this year—unusually warm, more like a lingering autumn than its true self. But out on the ice with my good friend and photo-buddy Pia ( @piasteen_photography ) chasing bubbles became an adventure, a welcome escape from the dull weather. As we brushed away falling snowflakes, our movements felt almost like those of curling players—sweeping and polishing the ice with comical dedication. The frozen world beneath us held its own kind of magic, and I found myself captivated by the intricate shapes within. During this unusually warm winter, chasing bubbles with Pia ( @piasteen_photography )was an absolute blast and a much-needed distraction from the dull weather conditions. At one point during the shooting on the ice, it almost felt like we were preparing for a curling match as we polished the surface and cleared away the falling snowflakes from the ice. I decided to focus solely on the shapes within the ice, having a monochromatic approach in mind.

Discover the timeless beauty of Switzerland’s glacial landscapes through a new collection of black and white fine art prints, where nature’s raw textures and dynamic contrasts take center stage—printed with archival pigment in museum quality on Hahnemühle PhotoRag 308g/sqm paper for lasting elegance.

Capturing the intricate details of these glacial landscapes requires precision in both technique and equipment. To preserve the sharpness and texture of the ice, I rely on short exposure times that freeze the subtle motion of the clouds and emphasize the rugged, unyielding nature of the glaciers. Using filters, particularly a Polarizer and the ND3+CPL combination from Maven, allows me to manage reflections and control the light, bringing out the full depth and detail in my images. These tools not only help reduce glare on the ice but also balance the light in high-contrast scenes, ensuring that the glaciers’ intricate patterns are rendered with clarity and nuance.

To emphasize these details further, I chose to photograph the glaciers in black and white. By stripping away the distraction of color, the raw textures and stark contrasts are brought to the forefront. This minimalist approach reveals the true character of the glaciers—their deep cracks, jagged ridges, and the dramatic interplay of light and shadow. It’s remarkable how much more becomes visible when the vibrant hues of nature are subdued, allowing the story of the ice to unfold in its purest form.

Winter in our forests is always a blast. You often find a mix of patches with more dense vegetation and open space. I like the play of lights and shadows even when there is not a lot of direct light, the dense canopy creates some very interesting scenes.

Order & Chaos in the woods.
Being outdoors in such conditions is such a joy. The landscape is covered in a soft blanket of snow which dampens all sounds and creates an almost eerie feeling. Here and there you will get spooked by the sound snow makes when it falls down from the trees. In this image, I love the contrast between the darks of the trees and the brights in the snow and fog.

The never-changing stack of wood in the woods
Over the last 6 years, this stack has not changed much. It’s often like a Deja Vu when you revisit a location regularly. This is a small place in the woods where 3 or 4 different trailheads start to some trails leading deeper into the woods or to the mountain-top. This particular stack of tree trunks is almost untouched for at least 5 years. We visit this place often in winter and the conditions are often very similar - so I have almost the same photo for 3 or 4 years. 😳
